What REALLY Poisons Birds: Avian Toxicology

چکیده

Birds have historically served as sentinels for human toxicity in the environment. Birds were used as sentinels for coal miners in the U.S. and England until the middle of the last century. Dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, methane and other poisonous gasses would affect sentinel canaries before they affected the miners, thus warning them of a dangerous environment. As our knowledge of avian toxicology increases, so likely will knowledge regarding the interrelationship of toxicity and its sequelea in birds and humans. As practitioners, we need to be aware of these potential links, share our findings with our colleagues, both veterinary and human, and inform owners of potential concerns with animal and human health. On a larger environmental scale, our wild birds are objects of studies that detect dangerous levels of heavy metals, pesticides and other chemicals in bodies of water and sources of food for both animals and humans. Affects on their health and fecundity are of conservational import, and have great significance for the environment and human health. For purposes of this presentation, the emphasis will be on toxins that are most commonly encountered in pet birds and those that are specific to avian species.

The acute oral toxicity, repellency, and hazard potential of 998 chemicals to one or more species of wild and domestic birds.

The acute oral toxicity, repellency, and hazard potential of 998 chemicals to one or more of 68 species of wild and domestic birds was determined by standardized testing procedures. Redwinged blackbirds were the most sensitive of the . bird species tested on a large number of chemicals, and an index based on redwing toxicity and repellency may provide an appropriate indication of the probabilit...

Avian food selection with application to pesticide risk assessment: are dead and desiccated insects a desirable food source?

Past evaluations of pesticide exposure have been conducted with substantial uncertainty regarding avian consumption of contaminated food items. One question is whether birds consume invertebrates that are killed by a chemical application and that may present an increasing chemical concentration as they desiccate. We addressed the research question in two phases. First, a laboratory study was co...

Toxicity reference values for protecting aquatic birds in China from the effects of polychlorinated biphenyls.

PCBs are typical of persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic compounds (PBTs) that are widely distributed in the environment and can biomagnify through aquatic food webs, because of their stability and lipophilic properties. Fish-eating birds are top predators in the aquatic food chain and may suffer adverse effects from exposure to PCB concentrations. In this review, we address the toxicity of PC...

Pathological lesions observed in chickens pre-infected with LP H7N1 A/CK/Italy/1279/99 avian influenza and challenged with homologous HP H7N1 A/ostrich/Italy/984/00

Most highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (AIV) emerge after field passage of non-pathogenic AIVs in birds. The outbreak of low-pathogenic H7N1 avian influenza virus in Italy during 1999-2000 followed by outbreak of highly pathogenic H7N1 avian influenza virus is one example in this regard. This experiment has been designed to investigate the effect of pre-infection of birds with LPAI on s...
